Advisory

On 11.02.2020 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within SAP Host Agent.

SAP Note 2841053 addresses "[CVE-2020-6186] Denial of Service (DOS) Vulnerability in SAP Host Agent" to prevent denial of service (dos) with a high risk for exploitation.

A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process, the team suggests.

Denial of Service (DoS) attacks that take a system offline may lead to significant cost for the company, studies quantify the costs in average between 4 and 5 millions dollars. Business continuity requires SAP systems staying online. The CVSS scores or vulnerability descriptions are not enough to represent how a simple bug can lead to a significant loss for companies.

Risk specification

An unauthenticated attacker can cause denial of service of the SAP Host Agent authentication service by sending malicious authentication requests resulting in the delaying of those requests to protect underlying infrastructure.

Solution

This note describes multiple strategies of remediating this vulnerability. It can be done either by port blocking, by IP whitelisting or by using certificate based authentication.  Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "Limit the network accessibility for ports 1128 and 1129 to untrusted networks. It is possible to restrict access to SAP Host Agents with via a IP-Based AccessControl. Keep in mind that the user interface of the Software Update Manager (SUM) runs on port 1128 (http) respective 1129 (https), too. Closing these ports in the user networks has the effect that administrators need to call the SUM locally or via a jump host (which is a good idea anyway). ".
