Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 2934135 was released on 14.07.2020 and deals with "[CVE-2020-6287] Multiple Vulnerabilities in SAP NetWeaver AS JAVA (LM Configuration Wizard)" within Java. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve missing authentication check directory traversal (read) with a hot news potential for exploitation in component BC-INS-CTC.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process.

Risk specification

This note has been re-released with updated ‘Solution’ information. This note addresses multiple security vulnerabilities in SAP NetWeaver AS Java (LM Configuration Wizard). The application does not properly perform an authentication check, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to execute administrative tasks. Additionally, the application does not sufficiently validate user provided path parameters. The risk rises since a public exploit exists!

Solution

SAP NetWeaver LM Configuration Wizard now properly enforces authentication and authorization.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Deactivate on all application servers the aliases CTCWebService ctc/core ctcprotocol respective application tc~lm~ctc~cul~startup_app and validate that service CTCWebService is offline as described in KBA 2939665". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 10.0 score.

Affected System

SAP Netweaver Application Server Java is part of the SAP NetWeaver Application Platform. It provides the complete infrastructure for deploying and running Java applications.

The advisory is valid for

  • LMCTC 7.30
  • LMCTC 7.31
  • LMCTC 7.40
  • LMCTC 7.50
