Advisory
SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for
vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.
SAP Note 2983204
was released on
08.12.2020 and deals with
"[CVE-2020-26837] Multiple Vulnerabilities in SAP Solution Manager 7.2 (User Experience Monitoring)" within SAP Solution Manager.
We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve
missing authorization check
with a
high potential for exploitation
in component SV-SMG-MON-EEM.
According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.
Missing authority checks are still the most common security defect related to authorizations in custom code. Since SAP uses an explicit authorization model, an authority checks must be coded in order to be executed. If an explicit check is not coded, all users have access. This type of vulnerability not only exists in SAP standard it also exists in customer coding. Check your custom developments for vulnerabilities that pose a risk to your systems. SecurityBridge helps detect code vulnerabilities before they are implemented in production.
Risk specification
An authenticated non-administrative user of SAP Solution Manager 7.2 (User Experience Monitoring) can deploy a malicious script that can exploit an existing path traversal vulnerability to fully compromise confidentiality exposing elements of the file system and partially compromise availability by making certain services unavailable SAP Solution Manager 7.2 (User Experience Monitoring) does not perform necessary authorization checks for an authenticated user, allowing the use of operations that should be restricted to administrators.Solution
The user authorization checks of the User-Experience Monitoring administration service are now properly enforced. Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "The workaround will temporarily deactivate the EemAdmin web-service on the SAP Solution Manager Java stack.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 8.5 score.
Affected System
SAP Solution Manager was introduced by SAP to cover the complete application lifecycle of the IT solutions running on premise, hybrid or in the cloud. SolMan requires an RFC connection to all managed systems in a landscape to fulfill its tasks. Cyber attackers may target the Solution Manager system as lateral movements can be achieved.
SAP Solution Manager is a must-have for SAP customers. It addresses a set of important aspects of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) for SAP. Examples:
- IT Service Management
- Data Volumn Management
- Test Suite
- Process Management
