Advisory
On 14.09.2021 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within ABAP.
SAP Note 3089831 addresses "[CVE-2021-38176] SQL Injection vulnerability in SAP NZDT Mapping Table Framework" to prevent sql injection with a hot news risk for exploitation.
A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process, the team suggests.
Missing authority checks are still the most common security defect related to authorizations in custom code. Since SAP uses an explicit authorization model, an authority checks must be coded in order to be executed. If an explicit check is not coded, all users have access. This type of vulnerability not only exists in SAP standard it also exists in customer coding. Check your custom developments for vulnerabilities that pose a risk to your systems. SecurityBridge helps detect code vulnerabilities before they are implemented in production.
Risk specification
This note has been re-released with updated 'Symptom’ information. DMIS Mobile Plug-In and SAP S/4HANA allow an authenticated attacker to call NZDT function modules remotely and gain access through executing manipulated query to gain access to the backend database. When the attacker is successful he completely compromises confidentiality, integrity and availability of the system.Solution
An assert statement will be added that will always evaluate selected function modules wrong and additionally a broader selection of function modules’ import parameter will be deactivated by an assert statement that require the parameter to be initial. Please view note to review affected function modules. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "As a workaround for systems with software component version SAP_BASIS 740 or higher and active Unified Connectivity (UCON) runtime checks, you can deactivate the remote capability for all IUUC_REMOTE and the listed IUUC* and DMC* functions.".
