Advisory
A note with CVSS 4.9 for component BC-DWB-TOO was released by SAP on 09.11.2021. The correction/advisory 3105728 was described with "[CVE-2021-40504] Leverage of Permission in SAP NetWeaver Application Server for ABAP and ABAP Platform" and affects the system type ABAP.
A workaround exists, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as project.
The vulnerability addressed is missing authorization check within ABAP.
Missing authority checks are still the most common security defect related to authorizations in custom code. Since SAP uses an explicit authorization model, an authority checks must be coded in order to be executed. If an explicit check is not coded, all users have access. This type of vulnerability not only exists in SAP standard it also exists in customer coding. Check your custom developments for vulnerabilities that pose a risk to your systems. SecurityBridge helps detect code vulnerabilities before they are implemented in production.
Risk specification
The template role SAP_BC_DWB_WBDISPLAY is expected to contain display authorizations for the development workbench only. This is not the case as it contains some change activities about transport management. If you have generated the profile for this role have copied this role and assigned it to users, then these users have too strong authorizations.Solution
The template role SAP_BC_DWB_WBDISPLAY is adjusted and the activities IMPA and IMPS are in authorization object S_CTS_ADMI. Although an alternative solution exists, it is advisable to apply the correction! This is the workaround, which was suggested by the SAP security experts: "Such roles can be identified by transaction SUIM, searching for roles with object S_CTS_ADMI and activities IMPA and IMPS. Identified roles and role SAP_BC_DWB_WBDISPLAY can be adjusted by transaction PFCG.".
