Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3316509 was released on 11.04.2023 and deals with "Remote Code Execution vulnerability in SAP Commerce" within SAP Commerce. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve remote code execution with a medium potential for exploitation in component CEC-COM-CPS-COR.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Risk specification

SAP Commerce allows an authenticated attacker to execute malicious code by modifying velocity templates due to insufficient input validation.

Solution

The application has been updated to prevent the modification of velocity templates.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Please assess the workaround applicability for your SAP landscape before implementation. Note that this workaround is temporary and not a permanent solution. SAP strongly recommends you apply the corrections outlined in the security note, which can be done in lieu of the workaround or after the workaround is implemented. Workaround: Limit the permissions to edit Velocity templates in SAP Commerce to users with permission to execute code elsewhere in commerce, such as the Hybris administration console.Impact: Users without permission to edit Velocity templates will no longer be able to edit such templates.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 4.7 score.
