On 12.09.2023 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within SAP BI.
SAP Note 3320355 addresses "[CVE-2023-40622] Information Disclosure vulnerability in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform (Promotion Management)" to prevent information disclosure with a hot news risk for exploitation.
A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as none, the team suggests.
Information disclosure is when an application fails to properly protect sensitive and confidential information from
parties that are not supposed to have access to the subject matter in normal circumstances.
Carefully review every information disclosure vulnerablity in regards to disclosure obligations post-GDPR for
‘Personal data’ under the Data Protection Act 2018.
Risk specification
SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform (Promotion Management), under certain conditions, allows an authenticated attacker to view sensitive information which is otherwise restricted. On successful exploitation, the attacker can completely compromise the application, causing a high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.Solution
Sensitive information is removed from the response before passing it to the clients. This issue is fixed in the patches listed in the “Support Packages & Patches” section. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "Please assess the workaround applicability for your SAP landscape prior to implementation. Note that this workaround is a temporary fix and is not a permanent solution. SAP strongly recommends you apply the corrections outlined in the security note, which can be done in lieu of the workaround or after the workaround is implemented. Grant appropriate rights only for the required user to access and perform promotions using Promotion Management. By default normal users do not have view rights, however, the users of the administrator group should be explicitly denied view rights on the Promotion jobs folder. For example: In CMC > Folders > LCM > Promotion Jobs > Right-click to select User Security > Add Principals, select the user > Add > Assign Security. Deny the view rights and press Apply & OK".
