On 13.02.2024 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within Java.

SAP Note 3426111 addresses "[CVE-2024-24743] XXE vulnerability in SAP NetWeaver AS Java (Guided Procedures)" to prevent external entity tunneling (xxe) with a high risk for exploitation.

A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance, the team suggests.

Risk specification

SAP NetWeaver AS Java (CAF - Guided Procedures) allows unauthenticated attacker to send a malicious request containing a customized XML file over the network. When this file is processed, it grants the attacker access to sensitive files and data without the ability to alter them.

Solution

The XML parser is now configured securely so that it does not allow external entities as part of an incoming XML document. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "In NetWeaverAdministrator -> Java System Properties, choose the configuration template and in the Filters tab add the filter to disable the caf~eu~gp~model~iforms~eap application -> Restart the NetWeaver.".
