Advisory
On 09.04.2024 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within Java.
SAP Note 3434839 addresses "[CVE-2024-27899] Security misconfiguration vulnerability in SAP NetWeaver AS Java User Management Engine" to prevent denial of service (dos) information disclosure with a high risk for exploitation.
A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process, the team suggests.
Risk specification
The Netweaver AS Java UME allows unauthenticated attacker to reset passwords due to enforcing weak security requirements for the Security Answer content resulting in Denial of service (DoS) and Information disclosure vulnerability.Solution
The requirement for user password are now applied on the security answer in the UME's 'Self-Registration' and 'Modify your own profile', except the requirement for the mixed case characters. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "Disabling "Self-Registration" and "Modify your own profile" would temporarily fix the issue".
