Advisory
On 11.06.2024 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within ABAP.
SAP Note 3457265 addresses "[CVE-2024-34690] Missing Authorization check in SAP Student Life Cycle Management (SLcM)" to prevent missing authorization check with a medium risk for exploitation.
A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as monthly patch process, the team suggests.
Missing authority checks are still the most common security defect related to authorizations in custom code. Since SAP uses an explicit authorization model, an authority checks must be coded in order to be executed. If an explicit check is not coded, all users have access. This type of vulnerability not only exists in SAP standard it also exists in customer coding. Check your custom developments for vulnerabilities that pose a risk to your systems. SecurityBridge helps detect code vulnerabilities before they are implemented in production.
Risk specification
Student Life Cycle Management (SLcM) allows an authenticated attacker to access and edit non-sensitive report variants that are typically restricted, resulting in escalation of privileges.Solution
Added authorization check that affected functions are now enforced to not read data for RFC calls. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "a) Mitigation via restricting authorization for S_RFC using transaction SUIM. You can verify that no user has authorizations for remote access to the function. Check for S_RFC with RFC_TYPE = FUNC and RFC_NAME = HRIQ_SELMETHODS_CALL_REMOTE or RFC_TYPE = FUGR and RFC_NAME = HRPIQ00SELMETHODS. Keep in mind that this component own hundreds of remote functions from various function groups. b) Mitigation via UCON blocking If you have configured UCON (even if your project still just is about logging) you can block remote access to this remote enabled function HRIQ_SELMETHODS_CALL_REMOTE. You can select for HRIQ* to block 509 remote functions. (There exist many more functions of this component.)Blocking = Phase ‘Final’ without assignment to a Communication Assembly".
Affected System
The advisory 3457265 describes a problem within an ABAP based systems of a specific version. Affected versions are described below. ABAP software is deployed in various software components and is widely used within the SAP product portfolio.
