Advisory
On 13.08.2024 a security relevant correction has been released by SAP SE. The manufacturer resolves an issue within BI/BO platform.
SAP Note 3479478 addresses "[CVE-2024-41730] Missing Authentication check in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform" to prevent missing authentication check with a hot news risk for exploitation.
A workaround does exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance, the team suggests.
Risk specification
SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform allows an unauthorized attacker to get a logon token using a REST endpoint resulting in full compromise of the system if single sign-on is enabled on Enterprise authentication.Solution
Configuration of the Single Signed On Enterprise authentication is now secure by default. Circumstances exist that prevent the timely installation of a patch provided by the manufacturer. In such cases, you may consider applying the suggested workaround as a temporary or compensating mitigation: "Please assess the workaround applicability for your SAP landscape prior to implementation. Note that this workaround is a temporary fix and is not a permanent solution. SAP strongly recommends you apply the corrections outlined in the security note, which can be done in lieu of the workaround or after the workaround is implemented. Change the Trusted_Auth_Shared_Secret property to the following value in the files mentioned in the step 2: Trusted_Auth_Shared_Secret=Disabled In these files: (All versions) INSTALLDIR\tomcat\webapps\biprws\WEB-INF\config\custom\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\tomcat\webapps\biprws\WEB-INF\config\default\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\warfiles\webapps\biprws\WEB-INF\config\custom\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\warfiles\webapps\biprws\WEB-INF\config\default\biprws.properties (Additional files to be modified for 4.3 SP03 and above) INSTALLDIR\tomcat\webapps\BOE\WEB-INF\config\custom\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\tomcat\webapps\BOE\WEB-INF\config\default\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\warfiles\webapps\BOE\WEB-INF\config\custom\biprws.properties INSTALLDIR\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\warfiles\webapps\BOE\WEB-INF\config\default\biprws.properties On Linux / Unix replace SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0 with enterprise_xi40 Restart Tomcat The "/tomcat/webapps" changes ensure that the changes are done immediately, without a need for the redeployment of the web applications. The "warfiles/webapps" changes ensure the changes hold through any updates. For the path to modify the files for other web application servers (not Tomcat), see: 2068932 - Default locations of Web application directories and caches for all supported application servers in BI 4.x [Master KBA] After upgrade to the fixed versions, these changes should be reverted. Impact of the workaround: Any trusted authentication workflows relying on biprws trusted authentication will stop working. Example: BW Event Scheduling, SAML configured on biprws only SAML configured for BOE (KBA 2791348 - How To: Configure Front-End SAML Authentication on BI 4.3) is not impacted, with this workaround.".
