Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3537476 was released on 14.01.2025 and deals with "[CVE-2025-0070] Improper Authentication in SAP NetWeaver ABAP Server and ABAP Platform" within Kernel. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve weak authentication check with a hot news potential for exploitation in component BC-MID-ICF.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Risk specification

SAP NetWeaver Application Server for ABAP and ABAP Platform allow an authenticated attacker to extract credentials from internal RFC communication. These credentials can then be used to establish communication between a new external program and the server, masquerading as an internal connection.

Solution

This fix ensures a clear distinction between internal and external communication.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Concerning the workaround described in FAQ note 3549556: If you need note 3007182 in a system but cannot apply it for some reasons (why not?), you can update the Kernel to the version listed above and set profile parameter http/intticket/mode = 0 to ignore the new security measures and avoid any regression issues with existing connections. But this means that no better security is in place". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 9.9 score.
