Advisory
A note with CVSS 6.1 for component BC-JAS-SEC-UME was released by SAP on 11.02.2025. The correction/advisory 3557138 was described with "Update 1 to Security Note 3417627 - [CVE-2024-22126] Cross Site Scripting vulnerability in NetWeaver AS Java (User Admin Application)" and affects the system type Java.
A workaround exists, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.
The vulnerability addressed is cross-site scripting (xss) within Java.
Cross-site scripting (XSS) is the name of a class of security vulnerabilities that can occur in web-based
applications. XSS combines
all vulnerabilities that allow an attacker to inject HTML Markup and/or JavaScript into the front end of the
affected web application.
XSS attacks can occur whenever the application dynamically creates its HTML/JavaScript/CSS content, which is passed
to the
user's web browser, and attacker-controlled values are used in this process. If these values are included in the
generated code without proper validation and encoding, the attacker is able to include arbitrary
coding snippets into the application's front end. The code is then rendered by the victim's web browser and
interpreted in the victim's current authentication context.
Risk specification
This security note is an update to SAP Security Note 3417627, as the fix provided in that note does not fully patch the vulnerability. The User Admin application of SAP NetWeaver AS for Java allows an attacker to inject malicious scripts via URL parameters, leading to a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that could potentially be exploited to gain unauthorized control or manipulate user interactions.Solution
The User Admin application of SAP NetWeaver AS for Java has been updated to properly validate and encode incoming URL parameters, effectively eliminating the XSS vulnerability and preventing malicious script injection. Although an alternative solution exists, it is advisable to apply the correction! This is the workaround, which was suggested by the SAP security experts: "Cross-site scripting/request forgery filter engine on IDS/IPS/firewall systems. ".
