SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 2814007 was released on 12.11.2019 and deals with "[CVE-2019-0396] Missing XML Validation vulnerability in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform (Web Intelligence HTML interface)" within BI/BO platform. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve external entity tunneling (xxe) with a high potential for exploitation in component BI-RA-WBI-FE-HTM.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Risk specification

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform (Web Intelligence HTML interface) does not sufficiently validate an XML document accepted from an untrusted source. An authenticated attacker can craft a message that contains malicious elements that will not be correctly filtered by Web Intelligence HTML interface in some specific worklfows.

Solution

An XML input validator has been introduced for the affected workflows. Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Filter engine on IDS/IPS/firewall systems screening for bogus external entity requests.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 7.1 score.
