Advisory

A note with CVSS 5.0 for component BI-BIP-SL-ENG-OLA was released by SAP on 08.03.2022. The correction/advisory 3103424 was described with "[CVE-2022-24398] Information Disclosure vulnerability in SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform" and affects the system type BI/BO platform.

A workaround does not exist, according to SAP Security Advisory team. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

The vulnerability addressed is information disclosure within BI/BO platform.

Information disclosure is when an application fails to properly protect sensitive and confidential information from parties that are not supposed to have access to the subject matter in normal circumstances.
Carefully review every information disclosure vulnerablity in regards to disclosure obligations post-GDPR for ‘Personal data’ under the Data Protection Act 2018.

Risk specification

Under certain conditions SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence Platform allows an authenticated attacker to access information that would otherwise be restricted.

Solution

Since the vulnerability lies on Olap connections, the problem can be solved by using another authentication mode for the connection: - Single Sign-on, where the authentication is delegated to another system that generates a session token used to identify the user. - BusinessObjects credentials mapping, where the connection parameters are saved in the BI Platform repository for each user. In addition, a new security right for OLAP connection has been introduced: "Download connection locally" in SAP BI 4.3 SP2.

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence suite is an analytics platform allowing SAP customers to make better decisions based on their business data. SAP BI is a module meant for producing business insights and expands its power in combination with HANA DB and also exists as BW/4 HANA. Due to processing sensitive business data, the Data security is of utmost importance.
