Advisory

SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.

SAP Note 3145046 was released on 10.05.2022 and deals with "[CVE-2022-27656] Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in administration UI of SAP Webdispatcher and SAP Netweaver AS for ABAP and Java (ICM)" within Kernel. We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve cross-site scripting (xss) with a high potential for exploitation in component BC-CST-WDP.

According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.

Risk specification

The Web administration UI of SAP Web Dispatcher and the Internet Communication Manager (ICM) does not sufficiently encode user-controlled inputs, resulting in Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability.

Solution

The Web administration UI of SAP Web Dispatcher and the Internet Communication Manager (ICM) now ensures proper content encoding to prevent XSS attacks.  Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "Workaround Option 1: Disable affected functionalities of administration UI by removing affected files from the file system. This workaround does not have to be reversed if you apply the patch after implementing the workaround. Workaround Option 2: Disable the administration UI. This workaround must be reversed if you apply the patch after implementing the workaround. Workaround Option 3: Remove user authorizations. This workaround must be reversed if you apply the patch after implementing the workaround.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 8.3 score.
