Advisory
SAP takes the security of its vast product portfolio very seriously and thus releases security fixes for
vulnerabilities reported by external researchers and their customers every second Tuesday of the month.
SAP Note 3357154
was released on
10.10.2023 and deals with
"[CVE-2023-40310] Missing XML Validation vulnerability in SAP PowerDesigner Client (BPMN2 import)" within SAP PowerDesigner.
We advice you to follow the instructions, to resolve
external entity tunneling (xxe)
with a
medium potential for exploitation
in component BC-SYB-PD.
According to SAP Security Advisory team a workaround exists. It is advisable to implement the correction as part of maintenance.
Risk specification
SAP PowerDesigner Client does not sufficiently validate BPMN2 XML document imported by an unauthenticated attacker resulting in a external entity tunneling vulnerability.Solution
The default security configuration was adjusted that no input in the BPMN2 from external entities are allowed. Alternativly, the consulting team has proposed the following: "As a workaround, edit untrusted BPMN2 file to remove external entities markups before import.". The suggestion may be considered, as a workaround or compensating mitigation. We recommend installing/applying the correction wherever possible and as soon as possible. Base your decision on whether or not to apply the patch on your companies and systems risk perspective and consider the provided CVSS 6.5 score.
